Frequently Asked Questions
1. How long are private lessons?
We offer 30, 45, and 60-minute lessons. Generally, we advise beginning students (and all students under the age of 10) to start with 30-minute lessons. If this is your first time studying with us, we encourage you to take a 30-minute trial lesson.
2. What is a trial lesson?
A trial lesson is a paid lesson that gives you an opportunity to meet and get to know the teacher. We understand that students have preferences for certain teaching styles. In the trial lesson, you can see our teaching style and decide if we will be a good "fit" for your child. If you are happy with the trial lesson, you have the option to enroll.
3. How is enrollment handled?
After the trial lesson, let us know a convenient day and time when you want to have regular lessons. We will reserve that time slot for you for the rest of the school semester (for example, September to December, January to June, or June to August).
4. How often are lessons?
Lessons are once a week unless you specifically request more.
5. What does my child need to bring to the lesson?
With the exception of piano students, your child will need to bring his or her own instrument. For beginners, we recommend renting a student model instrument from Sam Ash Music or All-County Music. The reason we advise renting rather than purchasing right away is that students can start playing one instrument and decide they don't like it and want to switch to a different instrument. By renting, you give your child time to find "their" instrument.
6. My child is a beginner. How soon will he or she be able to play a song?
Generally, our students are able to play "Mary Had a Little Lamb" and "Hot Cross Buns" after only one or two lessons. After six months of lessons, students are usually able to play songs lasting three or four minutes. After a year of lessons, students have usually learned ten or more songs lasting three or four minutes each.
7. How long will my child be expected to practice?
Practice time varies depending upon age and ability level. For beginners, we recommend practicing 15-20 minutes a day for steady progress. For intermediate and advanced students, we recommend 45-60 minutes a day. We will work closely with you to set an individualized practice plan in order to reach your goals.
8. What payment options do I have?
You may choose to pay by month or by semester.
9. Do you have a cancellation policy?
Yes. We require 24-hours notice if you wish to cancel a lesson. Unless it is a medical emergency or a death in the family, missed lessons are made up at the teacher's discretion. If the teacher needs to cancel, you will be notified at least 24 hours in advance and the missed lesson will be made up at a time that is convenient for both you and the teacher.
